i like valve and it is well known for its sandbox style of game design. the half-life series is a famous example of this. half-life and its expansions opposing force and blue shift are great games. however, i think the story has gotten a bit of a stale. i remember playing it way back in 1998 and being really impressed with how much new content was added to the game. i think gearbox did a great job, but there isn't much that i find completely new or exciting. if you do decide to pick it up, i would recommend the original half-life and opposing force first.
