The Integration of Acupuncture into National Health Insurance (NHI)

South Korea is unique in 2026 for its comprehensive reimbursement model for acupuncture. The Ministry of Health and Welfare regulates acupuncture as a "primary care" service, ensuring that the majority of the population can access treatment at a low out-of-pocket cost.

This systemic integration has led to the standardization of "Clinical Practice Guidelines" (CPGs). These guidelines specify the exact needle depth, stimulation time, and point selection for over 50 common conditions, ranging from chronic lower back pain to facial nerve paralysis. This ensures that regardless of which clinic a patient visits in Seoul or Busan, they receive a standardized level of care backed by national clinical data.
