The National Confectioners Association said retail sales of chocolate and other candy hit a record $36.9 billion last year. Wells Enterprises was founded in 1913 and has grown to be the second-largest ice cream company in the U.S., trailing only Ben & Jerry's owner Unilever. Wells makes more than 200 million gallons of ice cream annually and has more than 4,000 employees.
Halo Top's influence in the ice cream market has forced big brands to change their strategy. Unilever's Breyers brand responded to Halo Top's popularity by launching a low-calorie, high-protein line called "Breyers delights" in 2017 featuring labeling and packaging similar to Halo Top. But Breyers still lost 1.5 share points to Halo Top that year. Unilever followed up in 2018 with low-fat, low-calorie products from its Ben & Jerry's brand and, more recently, with its Culture Republick line of probiotic ice cream.
This acquisition isn't Wells Enterprises' first foray into the light ice cream space. Last year, the company introduced Chilly Cow, which has 55% less calories, 70% less fat and 60% less sugar than regular ice cream. But Wells will now have an advantage in the category with Halo Top in its portfolio. The brand seemed to come out of nowhere in 2012 and became the nation's top-selling pint by 2017, touting its low sugar content, high protein level and simple packaging approach of showing the calories on the front of the container.
It is unclear how much Wells is paying for Halo Top, but the Iowa company seems to be on an acquisition spree in order to become the country's leading ice cream maker. Wells also acquired Fieldbrook Foods in April, which gave the company ice cream plants in New York and New Jersey and hiked its production capacity by 25%. Wells told the Sioux City Journal the deal allowed the company to knock Nestlé out of the No. 2 spot for manufacturing, and that replacing Unilever as No. 1 was possible if they were to grow another 20%.
With Wells' expanding production capacity, marketing expertise and sufficient interest in seeing the Halo Top brand grow, this acquisition could potentially help Wells to get closer to beating out Unilever for the No. 1 spot as the top ice cream manufacturer in the U.S.
From a vitamin and mineral standpoint, the main contribution of any ice cream is calcium, which is important for strong bones. Still, one serving of Halo Top contains only 10% of the DV for calcium, while a 1-cup (240-ml) serving of milk has 21% of the DV (1, 2, 4).
Generally, most flavors include ingredients like skim milk, erythritol, eggs, prebiotic fiber, cream, organic cane sugar, vegetable glycerin, and organic stevia leaf extract. However, the ingredients may vary slightly for specific flavors.
Erythritol is virtually calorie-free in the amounts typically used. The source of this sweetener varies. The erythritol used in Halo Top ice cream is made from yeast fermentation of corn starch (9, 10).
Halo Top ice cream contains significantly fewer calories than traditional ice cream and supplies hunger-satisfying protein. This enables you to enjoy a treat while staying within your calorie goals (20, 21, 22).
This flavor had a rich and pleasant taste and featured a drizzle of caramel throughout to give it an extra boost of creaminess. The caramel could have been dispersed more evenly, but it was still one of my favorite flavors.
I had high hopes for Halo Top Birthday Cake, with its rainbow sprinkles and yellow cake-flavored ice cream, but it ended up being a miss. It tasted slightly more artificial than other flavors, and it took me a few spoonfuls to even find any sprinkles mixed in.
Still, its low fat content cheats it out of a creamy texture and may leave you feeling dissatisfied. In this case, you may be better off eating a small portion of natural or organic regular ice cream, which generally contains fewer additives.
Halo Top is light ice cream that actually tastes like ice cream. Which sounds silly, but when Halo Top first found its way into grocery store freezers, boasting fewer calories, less sugar, and higher protein than traditional ice cream, it became the first of its kind and created an entirely new category in ice cream.
We hate to brag but our fans really liked our new flavors as much as they loved the original flavors. So much so, we experienced a sudden tremendous growth that both overwhelmed and excited us beyond belief (somebody pinch us, please?). In August 2017, Halo Top became the #1 selling pint of ice cream in the U.S. beating out long-term industry giants. In November 2017, Time Magazine named Halo Top one of its top inventions of the year.
And finally, we created Halo Top Pops: small, delectable snack-sized ice cream pops of some of our most popular flavors so that we could continue eating more ice cream whenever and wherever we go. Some might say we have an ice cream problem, but we see it as more of a solution.

You may have heard all about Halo Top ice cream from our American neighbours, but have been unable to find it here in Canada. This isn't anything new for Canadians as we often miss out on some American products or services (i.e. Trader Joes or American Netflix). This time Canadians don't have to be disappointed for long as Halo Top will finally be available in Canada very soon.
If you haven't heard of it already, Halo Top is low-calorie, high-protein and low-sugar ice cream that actually tastes good. The entire pints of ice cream range from 280-360 calories and have around 20g of protein. At only 6-8g of sugar per serving, it's no wonder this was the best selling ice cream brand in America in 2017. It was also picked as one of the 25 best inventions of 2017 by Time magazine.
These flavours include; vanilla bean, chocolate, peanut butter swirl, chocolate chip cookie dough, candy bar, caramel macchiato, sea salt caramel, birthday cake, mint chip, pancakes and waffles, oatmeal cookie, and cookies and cream. Check here for details on each of the flavours.
\"Purchasers of the premium-priced ice cream simply have no idea how much ice cream they will get each and every time they buy a Halo Top 'pint.' And Halo Top has been doing this for years,\" according to the lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in San Diego.
The suit goes on to say, \"But just as consumers expect to be paying the advertised price for a full gallon of gasoline, so too they expect to be paying the advertised price for a full pint of ice cream. But when purchasing a pint of Halo Top ice cream, consumers frequently do not get a full pint.\"
Halo Top Creamery is an ice cream company and brand[1] sold in the United States,[2] Australia, Mexico, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Taiwan, Hong Kong, South Korea, Austria,[3] United Kingdom[4] and the United Arab Emirates. The brand is marketed as a lower-calorie alternative, partially substituting sugar with stevia, a plant-based sweetener, and erythritol, a sugar alcohol.
The ice cream brand was founded around 2011 by former attorney Justin Woolverton of Latham & Watkins LLP.[5] Woolverton had begun making ice cream in his own kitchen with the goal of reducing his consumption of carbohydrates and refined sugars.[5] In the early stages of Halo Top, Woolverton continuously experimented, tweaking and improving the ingredients for over a year. In order to create a long-lasting formula that could sustain shipment through the supply chain, Woolverton went to California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo Dairy Innovation Institute, where he was able to refine and polish the formula with a contract manufacture.[5] The company describes its product as the first ever "lifestyle" ice cream that can be eaten daily without overwhelming a typical caloric intake diet,[6] but nutritionists have expressed that "'just because it's a slightly better choice does not mean that it is a good choice.'"[7]
Halo Top launched in Los Angeles on June 15, 2012, and annual sales grew up around 2,500% during 2016 and continued to increase in 2017, despite a retail price of $5 per pint.[8] In July 2017, Halo Top became the best-selling ice cream pint at grocery stores in the United States, surpassing in popularity the Ben & Jerry's and Häagen-Dazs brands, which previously held that distinction for years.[9] By September of 2017, it had grown to 50 employees and was sold throughout the United States, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, Canada, Ireland, Germany, Finland, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom. By 2017, it had grown to 50 employees.[5] 041b061a72
