  • Significantly revised in reference to changing building types and construction standards

  • New chapters added on data centres and logistics facilities

  • Sustainable design integrated into chapters throughout

  • Over 100,000 copies sold to successive generations of architects and designers

  • This book belongs in every design office.

The Metric Handbook is the major handbook of planning and design data for architects and architecture students. Covering basic design data for all the major building types, it is the ideal starting point for any project. For each building type, the book gives the basic design requirements and all the principal dimensional data, and succinct guidance on how to use the information and what regulations the designer needs to be aware of.

Metric handbook : planning and design data

As well as buildings, the Metric Handbook deals with broader aspects of design such as materials, acoustics, and lighting, and general design data on human dimensions and space requirements. The Metric Handbook is the unique reference for solving everyday planning problems.

Originally devised as a guide for converting from imperial to metric measurements, 'The Metric Handbook' has since been totally transformed into the major handbook of planning and design data for architects. This new edition has been updated to account of the most recent changes to regulation and practice - in particular the increasing emphasis on environmental legislation - to meet the needs of the modern building design professional. The Metric Handbook deals with all the principal building types from airports, factories and warehouses, offices shops and hospitals, to schools, religious buildings and libraries. For each type the book gives the basic design requirements and all the principal dimensional data, as well as succinct guidance on how to use the information and what regulations the designer may need to be aware of. As well as buildings the Metric Handbook deals with broader aspects of design such as materials, acoustics and lighting, and general design data on human dimensions and space requirements. The Metric Handbook is a unique authoritative reference for solving everyday planning problems. It has sold well over 100,000 copies worldwide to successive generations of architects and designers - this is a book that truly belongs on every design office desk and drawing board.

Forms the basis for the rules, codes, principles and conventions needed to design buildings, covering size, volume, adjacencies, precedents, materials, tolerances, standards and expectations. Seeks to explain the principles of architectural design from a fundamental rather than aesthetic perspective. The handbook also covers broader aspects of design such as materials, acoustics and lighting, and general design data on human dimensions and space requirements. Updated in reference to the latest construction standards and new building types, and sustainable and flood-aware design has been integrated into chapters.

Superseded by Metric handbook - planning and design data. 6th edition (2018). Supersedes Metric Handbook - Planning and Design Data, 4th Edition (2012). Routledge is an imprint of the Taylor and Francis Group. First edition published as AJ Metric Handbook by the Architectural Press 1968. Second edition published by the Architectural Press 1999. Third edition published by the Architectural Press 2007. Fourth edition published by Routledge 2012. Fifth edition published by Routledge 2015. This document has been split into 2 parts for ease of use.

Codes and standards are often shaped through consensus by committees based on several factors, including historical precedence, common practice and empirical data. This article scrutinizes the national code for disabled people, namely TS 9111 (The Requirements of Accessibility in Buildings for Disabled and Mobility Reduced People-2011ed) regarding the mistake for nosing prohibition on stair nosing. This article detects the mistranslation of international code regarding the stairs nosing design. Nosing design in stairs is important and implementing it wrongly can cause serious injury or even death. Stairs accidents have a important clause under the headings of home accidents, killing thousands of people and injuring millions of people every year. Therefore, the design of the stairs should be given importance and the standards should lead the architects to this. Furthermore, it is stated that the imperative and the advice part should be clearly identified while writing codes, standards and bylaws. The author maintains that in the formulation of national codes and standards there should be references to the current praxis and the outcomes of relevant scientific research.

The BLS projection process does not end at publication. BLS is constantly working to improve the accuracy of its projections. To ensure that projections are reliable and of the highest quality, BLS retrospectively evaluates them when comparable data are available. Projections of the labor force, industry employment, and occupational employment are evaluated by metrics that provide measures of accuracy. These metrics were developed from a review of methods used by BLS and other agencies in evaluating projections.

These potential issues not withstanding, simulation should be strongly considered as a key element of any process to evaluate freeway performance, particularly during the alternatives analysis and design stages. As an example, a presentation to the TRB Freeway Operations Committee in January 2002 (Reference 20) identified 111 recent simulation experiences involving several models, including CORSIM, FREQ, INTEGRATION, PARAMICS, and VISSIM. Applications of these models included analyses / evaluations of ramp metering, HOV lanes, truck climbing lanes, auxiliary lanes, interchange modifications, design alternatives, widening, growth impacts, weaving sections, reconstruction planning, ITS strategies, and overall operations. In closing, the presentation identified the following keys to successful model applications: 041b061a72
