"It's the first time in a long time that there is research that shows how someone can have the power in their eyes at 55 and not see up close as well as 20 years earlier," says Dr. James Dobson, a co-author of the study. But, Dobson cautions, "[If someone's] way of life is to go into a situation where they're going to be reading from a distance, the lens may not be a solution." Dr. D. Corydon Hammond, a professor of ophthalmology at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, says the last step in treatment for this condition may be stem cell transplant, which might make the underlying disease worse. Other treatments include medication and surgery.
Cataracts are the leading cause of blindness in the world. "Cataracts are one of the most important reasons for blindness, not just in the United States but around the world," says Dr. Joseph Woo, ophthalmologist at San Francisco General Hospital. "They're just a little nugget that looks a lot like a grain of sand in the middle of a mud puddle."

But a study by researchers at the School of Pharmacy at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, reveals that more than half of all dietary supplement products in the U.S. market contain at least one common ingredient linked to retinal damage and damage to other body parts.
